Our volunteers, who join us from near and far, play a crucial role in helping us achieve our vision for a better future. They generously take time off work, contribute resources, and bring invaluable support to tackle the ongoing challenges our communities face. Without their dedication, our impact would not be as significant as it is today.

On June 16, 2013, just two weeks shy of his 16th birthday, Michael Westley, a bright and beloved 15-year-old, lost his life at the hands of the Chicago Police Department. His death is one of many tragic examples of a long-standing pattern of police misconduct and systemic injustice — particularly affecting Black and Brown youth in Chicago and across the nation.
For decades, the Chicago Police Department has faced allegations of corruption, cover-ups, and a lack of accountability. Michael’s case was no different. His mother, Chantell Brooks, endured not only the unimaginable pain of losing her son, but also the devastating aftermath: no officers were charged, the civil lawsuit failed to bring accountability, and no clear answers were ever given. She was left with heartbreak — and no justice.
Out of that pain, purpose was born.
In 2018, Chantell founded the Michael Westley Foundation — and officially launched publicly in 2022 — with one mission: to fight for justice and build real, lasting change for our youth.
Today, the foundation is raising funds to open a comprehensive youth center that will serve as a beacon of hope for underserved communities. This center will provide:
Through fundraisers, raffles, giveaways, community events, and public outreach, Chantell is turning her grief into action — and empowering others to join her.
Because justice delayed is justice denied. And because no mother should ever have to bury a child without answers, without accountability, and without peace.
It takes a village. And together, we can build a future where our children are protected, empowered, and free to thrive.
At the heart of our mission is a bold and urgent commitment:
To end police brutality in all forms, and to change the laws that currently allow harm, violence, and injustice against civilians — especially in Black and Brown communities.
We are fighting to:
These are just a few of the critical issues that require our collective action and attention. There is so much work to be done, and that’s where our incredible team of dedicated staff and volunteers plays a vital role. By organizing and assigning responsibilities, we’re able to make meaningful progress without burning out those on the frontlines.
Awareness and support are not optional — they are essential.
The Michael Westley Foundation is fully focused on the advancement of our communities by creating real opportunities, empowering youth, and giving families access to the resources they deserve.
We believe that bringing more positive activities, educational programs, and mentorship to our neighborhoods is key to uplifting our youth — keeping them inspired, engaged, and on a path to success.
We can’t do this alone.
🤝 Let’s come together to be the change our communities desperately need.
🙏 Your support — whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word — is valued and appreciated more than words can say.
